The Missing Middle
Protecting the River Teifi requires everyone to play their part. Regulators regulate. Water companies operate infrastructure. Farmers manage the land. Environmental organisations undertake research and restoration. Communities observe what happens every day. What is largely missing is a trusted, independent systems integrator that brings eveyone together and advocates for solutions rather than simply highlighting problems.
Teifi Community River Watch is the missing middle.
The River Teifi doesn't need more reports—it needs results. We bring communities, organisations and decision-makers together to turn evidence into practical solutions, advocate for stronger environmental standards, accelerate investment and ensure commitments deliver measurable improvements for the river.
Our First Chapter
Every movement starts somewhere. Our initial focus is the lower third of the River Teifi and its tributary nants (streams) and afons (rivers), where environmental pressures are particularly evident and where we believe community action can have an immediate impact.
This is our first chapter, not our final destination. We believe every river deserves an informed, independent community voice. Our ambition is to help communities establish Community River Watch chapters wherever people care enough to make a difference.
Report Polution
If you witness suspected pollution, please report it immediately. Prompt reporting helps ensure incidents are investigated quickly and can reduce the impact on the River Teifi and its wildlife. If it is safe to do so, note the exact location, time, what you observed (such as sewage, slurry, chemicals, unusual colour, odour, algae or distressed fish), and take photographs or videos where possible. Environmental incidents should be reported first to Natural Resources Wales or Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, using the emergency contact numbers provided on this website. Once reported, we would also welcome hearing from you so that Teifi Community River Watch can help build an evidence base, identify recurring issues, and support long-term improvements across the catchment.
River Health
The River Teifi is one of Wales' most important rivers, supporting internationally protected habitats and species including Atlantic salmon, sea trout (sewin), otters, lamprey and and several aquatic plant communities. A healthy river depends on clean water, diverse habitats and a balanced ecosystem. While the Teifi remains a remarkable natural asset, it faces increasing pressures from nutrient enrichment, wastewater, agricultural runoff, invasive species and the impacts of climate change. Protecting the river requires a catchment-wide approach based on sound science, collaboration and shared responsibility.
Current Issues
The Teifi is experiencing growing environmental pressures that are becoming increasingly visible. Prolonged low river flows, nutrient enrichment and eutrophication are encouraging excessive algal growth, reducing oxygen levels and placing stress on fish and other aquatic life. Sewage discharges, diffuse agricultural pollution and changing weather patterns all contribute to these challenges.
As a community, we are documenting what we observe, sharing evidence responsibly and encouraging action from those with the responsibility and resources to improve the river's health.
How You Can Help
Everyone has a role to play in protecting the River Teifi.
You can help by:
- Reporting suspected pollution incidents.
- Sharing your observations and photographs.
- Following and supporting Teifi Community River Watch.
- Respecting the river and its wildlife.
- Taking part in community events and river stewardship activities.
- Encouraging positive conversations about protecting the Teifi.
Every observation adds to our understanding. Every voice helps protect the future of the river.
Community campaigning and science
Understanding the River Teifi begins with good evidence. Across the catchment, dedicated organisations, volunteers and local communities are collecting valuable information about water quality, habitats and wildlife. This growing ecosystem and evidence base helps identify trends, informs decision-making and supports efforts to restore the river.
Teifi Community River Watch celebrates and promotes the excellent work already being undertaken by organisations such as Save the Teifi, Afonydd Cymru, West Wales Rivers Trust, Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales, citizen scientists and other local initiatives.
By bringing together observations, scientific monitoring and local knowledge, we can develop a clearer picture of the river's health and encourage informed action.
Latest Campaigns
Teifi Community River Watch is a new community movement. As our membership grows, we will launch campaigns that raise awareness, encourage practical action and celebrate positive progress across the Teifi catchment.
But fundamently Teifi Community River Watch is not campaigning for endless monitoring—it is campaigning for better standards, better infrastructure and better outcomes.
